Can you verify the production company exists? (Website, IMDb, social media)

No verifiable company = highest scam risk.

Google the company name + "film" or "casting". Check IMDb Pro if possible.

Is the audition/shoot location professional? (Studio, office — NOT a private residence or hotel room)

Private residence meetings are a top safety red flag.

Legitimate productions use studios, office spaces, or established venues. Never go to a private home alone.

Is compensation clearly stated in writing before you commit?

"We'll discuss pay later" means you'll be underpaid or not paid.

Get the rate, payment timeline, and method in writing BEFORE your first day.

If the role involves nudity or intimate scenes, is an intimacy coordinator confirmed?

No intimacy coordinator = no boundary management on set.

SAG-AFTRA requires them for union sets. Non-union should demand the same. If they say "we don't need one," walk away.

If the role involves stunts or physical action, is a stunt coordinator on set?

Uncoordinated stunts cause real injuries. Even "simple" falls need a pro.

Ask who the stunt coordinator is. If they don't have one, ask how physical scenes will be managed.

Is the expected shoot schedule reasonable? (Under 14 hours with rest periods)

16+ hour days with no breaks is exploitation, not dedication.

Ask about turnaround time (time between wrap and next call). Less than 10 hours is a red flag.

Are meal breaks and craft services confirmed?

"Bring your own lunch" on a paid gig = disorganized production.

CA law requires a 30-min meal break after 5 hours. Know your state's rules.

Have you received a written contract or deal memo BEFORE your first day?

No contract = no legal protection. Period.

Even a simple email confirming rate, dates, and usage rights is better than a handshake.

Does the contract address AI/digital likeness rights? Do you retain control of your image?

"All media in perpetuity" without AI protections means they can clone your likeness forever.

Are usage rights clearly limited? (Territory, duration, media types)

"Worldwide, all media, in perpetuity" for a low-budget project is a rights grab.

Fair usage: specific territory (US), limited duration (2-5 years), named platforms.

Is there a cancellation/kill fee if the production cancels?

No kill fee = they can cancel the day before and you get nothing.

Industry standard: 50-100% of day rate if cancelled within 24-48 hours of call time.

Have you shared the shoot location and schedule with someone you trust?

Nobody knowing where you are is dangerous on any set.
